Join Gene Barr for a special presentation on his book "A Civil War Captain and His Lady: Love, Courtship, and Combat from Fort Donelson through the Vicksburg Campaign." Hear the story of Josiah Moore, the captain of CO. F, 17th Illinois, and Jennie Lindsay, a woman from one of Peoria's most prominent families. Three years of exchanging letters reveal the important role a soldier's sweetheart played on the home front as well as a warrior's invaluable observations from the war front. Moore and Lindsay's communications delve into deeply personal observations of army life, death, loss, and the effect of war on a man's physical, spiritual, and moral well-being. Politics thread their way through the letters as Lindsay's father is elected to the Illinois Senate as Peace Democrat or Copperhead. Barr's book features previously unpublished material about the battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Vicksburg, and the Meridian Campaign.
"A Civil War Captain and His Lady" is part of the Battlefield Overlook Event Center Speaker Series.
