Gettysburg 1863: What was Life Like for the Civilians of Gettysburg?
In 1863, Gettysburg was the county seat of Adams County with a population of just over 2,000 people. There were eight churches, six major hotels, two banks, and three weekly newspapers. There were stores, tanneries, and brickyards as well as a declining carriage industry. There were gas street lamps and a rail connection with a telegraph line, providing daily communication with the outside world.
Join Timothy H. Smith, as he discusses the Gettysburg community at the time of the battle and how the people in our area went about their day to day lives. This program will be held at the Garden Room, located behind the Shriver House Museum at 307 Baltimore Street, Gettysburg.
