Gettysburg on the American Stage
The Battle of Gettysburg has been a fixture in American historical memory since 1863. Many people are familiar with how it has been depicted in fiction and on screen, but how has it been represented in the theatre? As it happens, both the Battle and the town have appeared on the stage on many occasions over the last 150 years. This presentation by Richard Sautter will examine these representations and explore how they reflect developments in theatre history and the reframing of issues of race, gender, and conflict in American popular culture.
