James Gettys and The Founding of Gettysburg
The story of Gettysburg begins with one family. Samuel Gettys arrived from Northern Ireland seeking opportunity—and found it on the Pennsylvania frontier, where he built a tavern, supported the Continental cause, and helped anchor a growing settlement. But it was his son, James Gettys, who would shape the future. In 1786, he laid out 210 town lots, transforming a frontier crossroads into a bustling county seat. This program traces the Gettys family’s remarkable journey and the founding of one of America’s most iconic destinations. Dinner will be at 6 p.m. followed by the program at 7 p.m. Registration is required. The cost is $60 per person for dinner and the program.
