In August, Gettysburg History received one of the most extraordinary archival donations in the organization’s history: more than 40 original letters written by Southern families seeking information about—and, in many cases, the return of—the remains of loved ones killed at Gettysburg.

Recently featured in The Washington Post and in an in-depth story by Gettysburg History, these remarkable letters offer an intimate glimpse into the long aftermath of the battle and the families who were still searching for answers years after the fighting ended.

Join Gettysburg History Director of Education Tim Smith, National Civil War Museum CEO Wayne Motts, and Gettysburg History President & CEO Andrew Dalton for a special program exploring the stories behind these newly discovered letters and the remarkable efforts of Gettysburg physician Dr. J.W.C. O’Neal to identify and recover the Confederate dead.

Guests will also have a rare opportunity to view selections from the original collection.
